to the website of Wrys and Wherefores, a weekly series of satirical columns that
cast a jaundiced eye on current events, whether local, national or global. In the tradition of H.L. Mencken, no subject is off limits for the barbs of columnist John Britten. In the manner of Dave Barry, John finds humor in the otherwise overlooked flotsam and jetsam of the back pages of America. And in the style of high school sophomore, Davis Smillington, most columns are silly, poorly written and un-worthy of publication. However, as noted when appropriate, many of the columns did slip through the cracks on busy days and were originally published in local papers. While not inventive enough for the New York Times, liberal enough for the Boston Globe or obtuse enough for the Guardian, other columns nevertheless sporadically appear in various other publications on very slow weeks or when the editors are on vacation.
